A New Source of Organic Potash and Phosphate Fertiliser

WHAT IS GREENSAND

A natural mineral and a source of Potassium “Potash” & Phosphorus fertiliser

Greensand Australia Pty Ltd has secured a substantial greensand deposit containing the mineral glauconite, located 60 km west of Katherine, Northern Territory, Australia.

This deposit is potentially unique, as it contains both recoverable Potassium (K) and Phosphorus (P).

Greensand consists of the potassium-rich green mineral glauconite, historically used for centuries as a natural potash fertilizer and soil conditioner. However, its limited solubility has restricted its commercial applications.

In a world-first innovation, Greensand Australia has developed a proprietary process to “activate” glauconite, significantly enhanncing its solubility.
This breakthrough has resulted in a slow-release, organic fertilizer with wide-ranging agronomic applications.

This presents a significant opportunity to develop a highly sought-after organic fertilizer containing both (K) and (P) while also pioneering a technology that may be applied to glauconite deposits globally.

WHO ARE WE?

Who is Greensand Australia Pty Ltd?

Founded in 2015 by John Canaris and Dr. Dennis Gee, Greensand Australia was granted exploration licence EL 33297 on Florina Pastoral Station, located 60 km west of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The deposit spans a large area and is estimated to contain up to 300 million tonnes of ore with approximately 37% glauconite. Notably, this deposit may be unique as it contains both recoverable Potassium (K) and Phosphorus (P).

A clean concentrate has been successfully produced using simple magnetic separation:

Laboratory and pilot trials have demonstrated that Florina glauconite concentrate can be “activated” to significantly enhance its solubility, thereby increasing its efficacy for plant use.

The deposit is located near the surface, allowing for cost-effective strip mining. The soft, friable sandstone is easily crushed and milled, making it highly accessible for processing. Strategically positioned near road, rail, renewable energy sources, and just 315 km from Darwin Port, the project is well-connected to key infrastructure.

Additionally, the project is eligible for various federal and state grant funding opportunities, further enhancing its development potential.

THE PROJECT

Greensand Australia, Florina Project

A large surface glauconite deposit in the Northern Territory

  • Located 315 km south of Darwin, near Katherine and the Northern Agricultural Zone.
  • Extensive, soft rock surface deposit exceeding 300 Mt, ideal for easy mining.
  • Positioned near road, rail, renewable energy sources, and key Asian agricultural markets.
  • Rich in Potassium (K) with additional Phosphate (P) potential.
THE PROCESS

The Activation Process

A proprietary process that unlocks potassium (K) for an effective slow-release fertiliser.

Many deposits worldwide could become commercially viable if their solubility were improved—a challenge that has eluded many.

We have patented a groundbreaking process to activate Florina glauconite concentrate, significantly enhancing its solubility and nutrient availability, as confirmed by standard citric acid tests.

Initial tests show approximately 20% of the K & P are immediately made available to the plant, the rest over approximately a year. This is a profound increase on un-activated glauconite which can take years to breakdown in the soil.

This process has been achieved using an “off the shelf” process in wide use around the world, and may be run on renewable energy, delivering a fully organic solution.

COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITIES

Transforming Greensand into High-Value Agricultural Solutions

Development of the Florina Greensand Deposit

Development of the unique Florina glauconite deposit, rich in potassium (K) and phosphorus (P), for use as a controlled release organic fertiliser, soil conditioner and possible carbon capture through enhanced rock weathering (ERW).

This product is specifically designed to meet the needs of markets requiring organic, chloride-free potassium and phosphorus. The primary target is the premium Sulphate of Potash (SOP) market, with potential to serve lower-priced markets, such as nearby Northern Territory agriculture, if cost efficiencies permit.

Expansion to Additional Greensand Deposits

Advancement of the technology and process for application to other suitable glauconite deposits in key market regions.

This unlocks significant commercial potential by enabling access to new markets, increasing revenue streams, and optimising resource utilisation.

Licensing Opportunities for Global Producers

Licensing of the patented technology and process to other existing glauconite producers, of which several are already operational globally.

Licensing the patented technology to existing glauconite producers offers significant commercial benefits, including generating steady revenue through licensing fees, rapidly expanding market presence by leveraging established producers, and reducing capital costs.
